“The Bach Project’s mission is to bring inspiring and collaborative performances of the music of Bach to new audiences with a focus on underserved communities in New England”

Our History

The Bach Project was founded in 2017 by Andrew Sheranian in association with Ashmont Hill Chamber Music to bring together the musical gifts of Boston’s vibrant Early Music scene and The Parish of All Saints, Ashmont.  In this inclusive and inspiring environment, the rich legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach is celebrated through performances, educational outreach, and community engagement.  The Bach Project has offered orchestral, choral, and chamber works including the Saint John Passion, Brandenburg Concertos, trio sonatas, and motets, creating thrilling performances in the Greater Boston community.  Now in its eighth season, The Bach Project seeks to provide a space where the transformative power of Bach’s music can be experienced by all, fostering a deeper understanding of the shared human experience as reflected in these works of timeless beauty.

Meet Our Artistic Director

  • Andrew P. Sheranian is a specialist in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the founding Artistic Director of The Bach Project, a Boston-based ensemble of singers and period instrumentalists dedicated to the full spectrum of Bach's works. Now in its ninth season, The Bach Project is committed to presenting historically informed performances of Bach's music—ranging from major sacred works and cantatas to chamber pieces and instrumental masterworks.

As a conductor and keyboardist, Sheranian has led or performed a wide breadth of Bach’s repertoire. His work as a keyboardist includes complete cycles such as the Orgelbüchlein, both books of the Well-Tempered Clavier, the 18 Great Leipzig Chorales, and the Trio Sonatas for Organ. His solo organ performances have featured many large-scale works such as the Toccata and Fugue in F Major, the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, and the Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major (St. Anne).

In the realm of vocal music, Sheranian has conducted works including the Mass in A major, the Mass in G minor, the St. John Passion, Ich habe genug, O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad, Lobet den Herrn, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, and many other cantatas and motets. Instrumental music projects have included Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and No. 6, the Violin Concerto in A minor and E major, and the Musical Offering.

In addition to his work with The Bach Project, Sheranian serves as Organist and Master of Choristers at the Parish of All Saints, Ashmont (Episcopal), a parish renowned for its strong musical and liturgical traditions. He holds music degrees from the New England Conservatory and Yale University, and continues to appear as an organist, continuo player, conductor, and recitalist in the U.S. and abroad.
